Claremont, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer's football team staked out a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter, but couldn't hold on, as Chapman roared back to defeat the Sagehens, 35-13, in a SCIAC game Saturday on Merritt Field. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in SCIAC, while Chapman earned its first win of the year to move to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer opened the scoring with a 64-yard, 10-play drive that culminated in a Kevin Masini 34-yard field goal with just under two minutes left in the opening quarter. In the second quarter, Sagehen quarterback Edward Sias hit Brett Harper (pictured) for a 5-yard score with 4:20 remaining in the first half to give Pomona-Pitzer a 10-0 lead. However, Chapman scored twice in the final two and a half minutes to lead 14-10 at the break.
The Panthers continued to pressure Pomona-Pitzer in the second half. Chapman scored twice in the third quarter to lead, 28-10, going into the fourth, and added an early 4th quarter score before Masini nailed a 32-yard field goal with 10:25 left to complete the scoring.
Sias completed 11-27 passes for 166 yards, while Aseal Birir rushed 26 times for 90 yards to lead Pomona-Pitzer.
Pomona-Pitzer hosts Cal Lutheran this Saturday at 1:00pm on Merritt Field.
