Football Begins 2018 At Home Against Lewis & Clark Valley

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team is ready to start their 2018 regular season with a home opener against Lewis & Clark Valley on Saturday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m.

2017

The Sagehens are coming off of a 4-4 overall season last year and went 3-3 in conference play with a no contest against Occidental. The Sagehens ended the year with two-straight victories over La Verne and CMS including one of the most dramatic Sixth Street Rivalry finishes in history with the famous "Hen Mary" followed by a two-point conversion to win in overtime, 29-28. The victory over the Stags was the first win in 12 seasons at Zinda Field.

Key Returners For Pomona-Pitzer

The Sagehens use a two quarterback system that features senior gunslinger Ed Sias and a versatile player in junior Karter Odermann.  Sias led with 1120 passing yards last season with six touchdowns while Odermann led the NCAA in completion percentage at 70.6% and totaled 926 yards and nine touchdowns.

After losing their All-Time Leading Rusher in Aseal Birir, the Sagehens have a big hole to fill in the backfield. Odermann led all returns last season with 319 yards and six touchdowns, but the Sagehens will look to their youth to fill some big shoes in the backfield this season.

The receiving core returns Sixth Street hero, junior David Berkinsky, who leads all returners   with 598 yards receiving and two touchdowns off of 58 receptions. The Sagehens will look for big years from Nick Kapule who totaled 225 yards last season and Odermann who helped out the receivers with 230 yards and two touchdowns a season ago. The Sagehens also anticipate the return of Ryan McGee who missed all of 2017 with an injury but lit the SCIAC on fire in 2016 with 705 yards and seven touchdowns.

The defense lost two exceptional linebackers last season in Zach Harris and All-Time Leading Tackler, Evan Lloyd. Senior Jack Storrs looks lead the linebacking core this season along with fellow teammate William Nahm. Storrs leads all returners in tackles with 51 a season ago and Nahm returns as the third highest with 47.

The defensive line returns sophomore Kyle Davis, who had a standout freshman year leading all defensive linemen with 47 tackles and one sack a season ago. Junior Andrew Heffler also returns to the defensive front this season as he recorded 19 tackles a season ago with 0.5 sacks.

The Sagehens return some valuable pieces of their secondary this season with seniors Eric Smith, Elan Harris and Andrew Phillips. This group led the SCIAC in interception in 2016 and came away with three combined last season. Pomona-Pitzer will look to junior Peter Labarbera and sophomore Tate Tussing to also make an impact in the passing defense this season.
