Sagehens Start Fast, Cruise To 87-64 Win Over La Sierra

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the game's first eight minutes and held a double-digit lead throughout as it captured an 87-64 win over La Sierra on Saturday evening at Voeklel Gymnasium.

Sophomore guard Kyle McAndrews (Seattle, Wash. - pictured) had 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first half for the Sagehens, who improve to 2-0 on the young season after defeating Westmont at the buzzer yesterday. La Sierra falls to 0-4 with the defeat.

Sophomore Jake Klewer (Tucson, Ariz.), who had the buzzer-beater to beat Westmont yesterday, added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 6-6 from the floor. Klewer was also 3-3 from the floor in the Westmont game, leaving him a perfect 9-9 through the first two contests. Senior guard Xavyr Moss (Federal Way, Wash.) also had 12 points, while sophomore guard Michael Cohen (Tarzana, Calif.) added 11.

McAndrews shot 5-6 from the floor and 6-6 from the foul line in the first half to help the Sagehens to a 50-28 lead at the break. Pomona-Pitzer did have to withstand a fast start from La Sierra in the second half, as the Golden Eagles used a 14-3 run to get back within 53-42 with just over 15 minutes to play.

However, the Sagehens withstood the rally as sophomore Joe Eyen (Granite Bay, Calif.) and senior Harrison Green (New York, N.Y.) came off the bench to hit three-pointers to stop the La Sierra momentum. Green finished with eight points and a game-high seven assists, to go along with only one turnover (which came with 30 seconds left and the Sagehens running out the clock).

La Sierra was led by Bennett Shaw with 13 points, while Joshua Zonker came off the bench to contribute 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action at the David Wells Classic this weekend, facing the Master's College at CMS on Friday and hosting UC Santa Cruz on Saturday.
