Sagehens Coast Back Into Win Column With 77-45 Win Over UC Santa Cruz

Claremont, Calif. - Junior forward Jake Klewer (Tucson, Ariz. - pictured) had 13 points and 13 rebounds as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the young season by cruising to a 77-45 win over UC Santa Cruz on Saturday on the second day of the David Wells Classic.

Sophomore guard Kyle McAndrews (Seattle, Wash.) continued his strong play this season with a well-balanced line of 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Sagehens, who improve to 3-1 on the year. UC Santa Cruz sees its record slip to 2-3 with the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer used its defense to hold UC Santa Cruz scoreless for over 10 minutes in the first half, as they used a 20-0 run to turn an 11-7 deficit with 13:37 to go in the half into a 27-11 lead with 3:56 left in the half on a Jake Klewer jumper. Marshal Arnwine finally ended the drought for the Banana Slugs with a put back with 3:15 on the clock, before the Sagehens settled for a 31-16 lead at the break.

A three-pointer from sophomore guard Michael Cohen (Tarzana, Calif.) and a Klewer jumper in the paint pushed the lead to 20 early in the second half at 36-16, and the outcome was never in doubt the rest of the way.

Twelve different Sagehens scored in the game, as senior guard Xavyr Moss (Federal Way, Wash,) and sophomore guard Joe Eyen (Granite Bay, Calif.) each added nine points. James Hidalgo led UC Santa Cruz with 13 points off the bench.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it opens SCIAC play with a home game against Chapman on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
