Pomona-Pitzer Digs Out Of Huge Hole, But Comes Up Short At Redlands

Redlands, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team rallied from a 22-point deficit to close to within three points midway through the second half, but finally fell 81-72 at Redlands on Saturday evening.

The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the SCIAC, while Redlands improves to 3-2 overall and remains perfect in the SCIAC at 2-0.

The Sagehens appeared to be dead and buried in the first half, as Redlands shot 62.5 percent to take a 41-19 lead on a Ricky Peetz three-pointer. However, Pomona-Pitzer crawled closer by closing out the half on a 9-0 run to pull back within 41-28. Junior forward Jake Klewer (Tucson, Ariz.), who finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds, had a pair of lay-ups during the run.

Pomona-Pitzer kept the momentum going in the second half, as a Klewer lay-up and a three-pointer from sophomore guard Michael Cohen (Tarzana, Calif.) quickly got the Sagehens within 10 points at 45-35. A three-pointer from senior guard Xavyr Moss (Federal Way, Wash.) made the score 49-40, and a three-point play from senior forward Donald Okpalugo (Mancehster, Eng. - pictured) closed the gap to 52-45 with 15:21 left to play.

The Sagehens kept whittling away, as a three-pointer from senior guard Harrison Green (New York, N.Y.) got the lead down to six, a lay-up from sophomore guard Adrian Brandon (Seattle, Wash.) cut it to four, and a three-pointer from Cohen with 11:11 left got the Sagehens within 59-56.

That was as close as the score would get, though, as Brian Kuklok had a jumper and a three-pointer, and Josiah Brensdal had a lay-up as a part of a 7-0 run to get the Redlands lead back to double digits at 66-56.  A three-pointer from sophomore guard Kyle McAndrews (Seattle, Wash.) and a lay-up from Okpalugo off a Cohen feed got it down to 68-63,  but Peetz hit two three-pointers to push the margin back to 79-67 with three minutes left and effectively seal the game.

Scoring was balanced for both teams, as Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands each had five players in double figures.  McAndrews had 14, Moss 13, Klewer 12, Okpalugo 11 and Cohen 10 for the Sagehens, while Brensdal (16), Kirk (16), Peetz (15), Alex Rudd (11) and Kuklok (10) scored in doubles for Redlands. The Bulldogs shot 61.5 percent overall (32-52) and 13-22 on three-pointers (59.1 pct.).

Pomona-Pitzer returns home on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Cal Lutheran.
