Sagehens Coast To SCIAC Win Over Caltech

Pasadena, Calif. – Junior forward John Weiss (Cleveland, Ohio - pictured) had 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team cruised to a 75-42 win over Caltech on Saturday evening at the Braun Athletic Center.

With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the SCIAC, while Caltech falls to 1-12 overall and 0-4 in league play.

A Weiss three-point play gave the Sagehens an early 9-2 lead, and after Caltech answered with a basket, Pomona-Pitzer scored the next eight points to push the lead up to 17-4 on a lay-up from junior forward Jake Klewer (Tucson, Ariz.). With the score 21-10, Pomona-Pitzer went on a 9-0 run, capped off by a Weiss three-pointer to take a 20-point lead at 30-10 with 2:53 left in the half, and went into the locker room with a commanding 34-13 lead at the break.

The Sagehens then scored the first nine points of the second half to stretch the lead to 30 points at 43-13, and were able to cruise the rest of the way.

Pomona-Pitzer had a balanced attack, as Weiss had 15 points and seven rebounds, Klewer had 13 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore guard Kyle McAndrews (Seattle, Wash.) had 12 points and seven rebounds. The Sagehen defense held Caltech to just 26 percent shooting (14-53), including 0-16 on three-pointers, and held a 54-31 edge on the boards. KC Emezie led the Beavers with 12 points, while Pan Wang added 10.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Tuesday when it plays a non-league game at Cal State San Marcos before returning to SCIAC play with a home contest against Occidental on Saturday at 7 p.m.
