Sagehens Stretch Win Streak To Five, Defeat Oxy 68-60
Los Angeles, Calif. - Sophomore forward Gibson Farone-Collins had 15 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team won its fifth straight game with a 68-60 road win over Occidental on Wednesday.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 10-5 on the year and 6-1 in the SCIAC, winning its fifth in a row since a loss to Schreiner on Dec. 29.
Occidental jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead and the Sagehens trailed the entire first half, until a fast break basket from Farone-Collins put Pomona-Pitzer ahead 36-35 at the break.
The early part of the second half was tight as the Sagehens led 41-37 early before a 6-0 run from Occidental put the Tigers back in front. Junior guard Michael Cohen weaved through the defense for a tying layup and Farone-Collins knocked down a three-pointer off a kickout pass from senior forward John Weiss for a 46-43 lead.
After Occidental pulled back within 48-46, junior guard Joe Eyen and Weiss hit threes on two straight possessions to give Pomona-Pitzer its largest lead at 54-46 with 9:30 to play. Once again, Occidental answered and got to within 56-52 with six minutes left on a Spencer Levy threee-pointer. Junior guard Kyle McAndrews answered with a layup after a timeout, but Levy hit a floater with 4:30 to go to make the score 58-54.
The Sagehens were able to trade baskets down the stretch to hold off Occidental's comeback bid. McAndrews scored again for a 60-54 lead, then fed Weiss for a layup and a 62-56 lead. After the Tigers made it 62-58, freshman guard Nick Nordale grabbed a huge offensive rebound with just under a minute to go, and McAndrews hit both ends of a one-and-one to push the lead back to six.
Occidental cut it to four on a lay-up one final time, but Cohen hit both ends of a one-and-one to make the score 66-60. After Occidental missed two three-pointers, McAndrews grabbed a long defensive rebound and leaked out for the final basket to make the score 68-60.
Farone-Collins had a new career high with his 15 points, and recorded his second double-double in the last week after tallying 10 points and 11 rebounds in Saturday's win over Whittier. Senior forward Jake Klewer (pictured) added 13 points and nine rebounds, McAndrews finished with 12 points, and Nordale added 11 to give Pomona-Pitzer five players in double figures.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday for a non-league home game against UC Santa Cruz, beginning at 2 p.m.
