Men's Basketball Defeats Occidental To Close Out Regular Season

Claremont, Calif. - Kyle McAndrews had 17 points, leaving him three shy of 1000 for his career, as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team finished the 2013-14 regular season with a 63-53 win over Occidental on Saturday evening.

The win improves Pomona-Pitzer to 18-7 overall and 13-3 in the SCIAC, as the Sagehens will be the second seed in next weekend's SCIAC Tournament and host Chapman at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. CMS clinched the top seed with a win over Cal Lutheran and will host the Kingsmen again in the other semifinal on Friday. Occidental slips to 11-13 overall and 6-9 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer honored the program's four seniors (pictured) before the game, including graduate students Xavyr Moss and Dan Campbell, and starting forwards Jake Klewer and John Weiss. Moss got the Sagehens jumpstarted with two three-pointers for Pomona-Pitzer's first six points and finished with 11, while Klewer added 10 points and seven rebounds and Weiss had eight points and seven rebounds.

The Sagehens led 26-18 at the half and had to fight off a second-half rally from the Tigers before pulling away for a comfortable double-digit lead. Occidental was as close as 47-43, but Moss buried a momentum-changing three-pointer, Klewer hit two foul shots and a jumper and sophomore Gibson Farone-Collins scored on the break for a 9-0 run that stretched the lead back up to 13.

McAndrews came into the game with 980 career points and sat for a good portion of the first half with two fouls. He got to 17 points on a late lay-up with 1:32 to go, but didn't have a chance to score again.

Pomona-Pitzer lost its most recent meeting with Chapman 55-49 on the road last Saturday, and won in double-overtime at home against the Panthers behind a career-high 34 points from McAndrews.
