Torrid Sagehens Cruise Past Grove City

Claremont, Calif. - Senior guard Michael Cohen (pictured) had 29 points on 10-11 shooting (6-7 from three) as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team used scorching hot shooting to take a 91-61 win over Grove City on the first day of the David Wells Classic on Friday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-1 on the season (2-0 against NCAA teams), while Grove City suffers its first loss and falls to 3-1.

Cohen missed his second shot of the game, but connected on his last nine shots (including six straight three-pointers) to reach a new career high with 29 points, passing his previous best of 28 set last year at Redlands. Gibson Farone-Collins added 16 points on 6-6 shooting from the floor, while senior guard Joe Eyen had a career high 16 points as well.

The Sagehens shot 73 percent from the floor in the first half (19-26) on their way to a 49-33 lead at the break. Grove City shot over 50 percent as well, as the rebounding margin was only 12-7 at halftime (Pomona-Pitzer's favor).

Grove City started the second half on a quick 5-0 run to cut the lead to 49-38 and force a Pomona-Pitzer timeout, but the Sagehens then came back with a 10-0 run that stretched to 16-1 as Cohen and Eyen hit three-pointers to make the score 65-40.

Mitch Marmelstein was the only Grove City player in double figures (11 points). The Sagehens finished the game shooting 61.5 percent (32-52) and with a 26-21 rebounding edge, and scored 91 points without leading returning scorer Kyle McAndrews (17.8 ppg in 2013-14), who missed his third straight game with an injury.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action tomorrow when it faces Lewis & Clark at 7 p.m.
