CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team got its first win of the season with a 68-59 win over California Maritime in game two of the 2016 David Wells Classic on Saturday night.
The Sagehens were led by freshman Micah Elan who had a career-high 18 points and five assists in the win. Sophomore Daniel Rosenbaum chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds and freshman Adam Rees added a career-high 11 points.
The Keelhaulers were led by Travis Arenas who had a team-high 14 points in the loss.
This win marks the first win of the season for the Sagehens as they improve to 1-2 on the year. Cal. Maritime drops to 5-4 on the year with the loss.
Cal. Maritime played from in front in the first half as they connected from three-point range early and often. The Keelhaulers came out of the gate shot 43.8% from three-point range in the first half but the Sagehens kept the game close and only trailed the Keelhaulers 35-31 heading into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer played solid defense down the stretch in the second half and forced Cal. Maritime to turn the ball over eight times that led to easy fast break points for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer took its largest lead of the night as they went up 12 after an Elan fade away jumper and a Rosenbaum layup off of a turnover to give Pomona-Pitzer a 66-54 lead with 2:29 remaining.
The Sagehens were able to hold off the Keelhaulers in the final minutes and secured their first win of the season.
