CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech 70-50 on Thursday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play. Caltech drops to 3-12 overall and 2-4 in the conference this season.
The Sagehens were led by junior Jack Gale who tallied a career-high 16 points in the win. Sophomore Daniel Rosenbaum scored 14, sophomore Corbin Koch and freshman Micah Elan each chipped in with 10 and freshman Adam Reese chipped in with seven points off of the bench.
The Beavers were led by Nasser Al-Rayes who notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. David LaBaron tallied nine and Alec Andrews added seven in the loss.
Caltech started out the first half on a quick 7-0 run as the Sagehens misfired on their first six shots. After the slow start on offense, the Sagehens battled back and took their first lead of the game at 15-14 after a Rosenbaum three-pointer with 7:35 to go in the half.
Pomona-Pitzer outscored Caltech 17-11 in the last seven minutes of the half and held a 32-25 lead heading into halftime.
Caltech came out in the second half and cut the lead down to 34-39 but the Sagehens answered with an and-one layup by Gale to put an end to the Beavers' run.
Pomona-Pitzer's offense took off after the Gale conversion and went on an 8-0 run to take a 47-36 lead with 12:21 remaining.
The Sagehens stayed on top in the second half and extended their lead to a game-high 22 points after three-straight three pointers by Reese, Rosenbaum and Koch with 5:58 to go.
Pomona-Pitzer was too much for the Beavers to handle as the Sagehens earned their second SCIAC win in a row.
