Men's Basketball: Sagehens Win Third Straight With 71-59 Win Over Occidental

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team extended its winning streak to three games after its 71-59 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play this season while Occidental drops to 9-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

The Sagehens were led by freshman Micah Elan who had a career-high 25 points in the win. Sophomore Corbin Koch helped out with a solid 23 points and sophomore Daniel Rosenbaum chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds.  

The Tigers were led by Andrew Johnson who had a team-high 21 points in the loss. Austin DeWitz tallied 11 points and nine rebounds and Brandon Ruotolo came off the bench with nine points of his own.

Pomona-Pitzer came out I the first half and Koch went on a 9-0 run to give the Sagehens an early lead but Occidental responded with an 18-2 run to take an 18-11 lead with just under 9:00 remaining in the half.

Pomona-Pitzer regrouped after giving up the big run to the Tigers and began to chip away at the Occidental lead and cut the deficit down to 22-18 after an Elan jump shot with 4:31 remaining.

Occidental was able to maintain its lead at the end of the first half and led 26-21 going into halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer was on fire from beyond the arc in the second half. After ending the first half shooting 1-8 from three-point territory the Sagehens came out and connected on six of their first seven shots from three-point range as they held a 41-34 lead with 14:45 remaining.

After jumping out in front from their quick second half start, the Sagehens maintained their lead throughout the second half as the Tigers offense went cold. Occidental only converted on 51% of its field goal attempts in the second half while Pomona-Pitzer cashed in on 67.9% from the field.

The Sagehens were able to ice the game after back to back scores from a Koch three-pointer and an Elan jumper to take a 64-51 lead with 3:15 to go.
