WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team ended their regular season on a high note as they defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier 93-85 on Wednesday night at the Graham Athletic Center.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens end the regular season with a 13-11 overall record and 11-4 in conference play. Also with the win, the Sagehens lock up the No. 3 seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
The Sagehens were led by Micah Elan who tallied a game-high 22 points in the win to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Daniel Rosenbaum and Adam Rees each added 18 points to the Sagehens' total while Jack Boyle also notched double digits with 10 points.
Pomona-Pitzer had a great shooting night to cap off its regular season as they shot 56.1% from the floor and 42.9% from beyond the arc. The Sagehens came out of the gate and quickly took control as they opened up on a 19-5 run in the first five minutes of the game.
The Sagehens didn't stop there as they went on to extend their first half lead to 23 points just 10 minutes in as they took a 29-16 lead with 9:15 left until halftime. Whittier got hot down the stretch and made up some ground on the Sagehens as they went on and outscored the Sagehens 24-17 in the final 10 minutes and cut the Pomona-Pitzer lead down to 46-40 heading into halftime.
The Poets got within striking distance early in the second half as they trimmed the lead all the way down to just three points at 46-43, but the Sagehens slowly built back their lead and got it back up to 10 points at 60-50 with 15:09 left in the game.
The Poets tried to come back again late in the half but the Sagehens had an answer and kept the Poets away from a big run to tie the game as they finished off the regular season with a good road win over the Poets.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next enter the SCIAC Postseason Tournament where they will travel to the No. 2 seeded Occidental Tigers on Friday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
