CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team earned their first win of 2019 in a big way with a 116-78 win over non-conference opponent Cal Miramar on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 1-2 overall.
The Sagehens were led by senior Micah Elan who just missed his first double-double of the season with 23 points and nine assists. The Sagehens had six other players reach double-digit scoring as senior Jack Boyle netted 19, junior Alex Preston had 16, sophomore Matthew Eberle tallied 13 and first-years Brendan Mora and Johnny King each with 10.
Pomona-Pitzer had an impressive night shooting as they tallied a season-high 116 points this season while shooting 53.2% from the floor and 41.5% from beyond the arc. The Sagehens wasted no time getting out to an early lead as they quickly went up 12-1 inside the first four minutes of the game. The Fighting Falcons did just that and fought their way back and closed the gap to just one point at 18-17 after a made layup with 13:14 left before halftime.
The Sagehens responded after having their deficit closed down to one point and answered with a 14-0 run to give themselves some breathing room at 32-17 just over the midway point of the first half. Pomona-Pitzer poured on the offense late as they scored an impressive 63 points in the first half and led 63-37 at the break.
Pomona-Pitzer didn't let up in the second half on offense and continued to build their lead over Cal Miramar. The Sagehens took their largest lead of the game at 46 points after an Elan three-pointer extended the score to 98-52. The Sagehens hit 100 points with 7:36 to go and was able to ride their big lead to a comfortable win in their home opener.
