CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team capped off the 2019 David Wells Classic with a big 92-72 win over non-conference opponent Lewis & Clark on Saturday night at Roberts Pavilion.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-2 overall.
The Sagehens were led by Senior Micah Elan who went for a season-high 33 points in the win. Junior Alex Preston added 20 points and eight rebounds while senior Jack Boyle and junior Pavle Rohalj each had eight points in the win.
The Pioneers actually shot a better percentage from the floor as the Pioneers shot 50.8% to the Sagehens' 47% but the Sagehens forced Lewis & Clark to turn the ball over 17 times and the Pioneers committed 21 fouls while the Sagehens had just 12. Pomona-Pitzer outrebounded Lewis & Clark 41-30 and converted 22 points off of turnovers.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead within the first two minutes of the game. Lewis & Clark never led in the game, but kept it close early on in the first half.
The Pioneers pulled to within one point at 17-16 just about midway through the first, but the Sagehens steadily grew the lead throughout the second part of the first half and took a 42-37 lead into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer outplayed the Pioneers in the second half and outscored them 50-35 in the final 20 minutes of the game. Lewis & Clark closed the gap to within two points at 47-45 after a made layup with 17:08 left to play but the Sagehens answered wioth a big run and went up by 10 points at 67-57 after a first-year Brendan Mora layup with 9:09 left in the game. Pomona-Pitzer extended that lead to 80-57 in the next four minutes and put to rest any comeback chance for the Pioneers in the second half.
