La Verne Men, CMS Women Earn SCIAC Titles

Oak Valley, Calif. - The La Verne Men's Golf team and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Women's Golf team each took dominant wins to defend their titles at the three-day SCIAC Championships, which concluded on Monday at Oak Valley Golf Club.

The La Verne Men's team came into the final round on Monday with a seven-shot lead over CMS and doubled it to win the tournament by 14 strokes (867 to 881). The CMS Women's team jumped out to a 29-shot lead after the first round and won by 48 over Redlands (941 to 987).

CMS had both individual champions as Brad Shigezawa shot a final round 68 to finish with a four-under par 212, winning by three strokes over defending SCIAC champion Derek Zachman and Kevin Holiday, both of La Verne.

Shaina Raskin started the tournament with an even-par 72 for the CMS women and led the rest of the way, as she earned a 229, winning the tournament by four shots over teammate Tiffany Su.

La Verne had three of the top four finishers on the men's side, as Kelby Scharmann tied for fourth with an even-par 216, matching Cal Lutheran's Mikey McGinn, who shot a final round 68 to take the early clubhouse lead with a 216 over an hour before the other top competitors finished.

For host Pomona-Pitzer, the women's team had its best showing in its young history with a fourth-place finish at 1042. Freshman Tiffany Gu shot a 75 on the second round, the best in the women's field, and closed with a 78 to come in third place overall with a 235. Maya Reddy of CMS was in fourth with a 240, and three players tied for fifth with a 241: Kristin Oberiano of Occidental, Hannah Durette of Redlands and Marissa Suehiro of CMS.

Chandler Jennings led the host Pomona-Pitzer Men with a 320 (78-78-74), tying for 17th place overall.
