The Pomona-Pitzer men's golf team took a giant step forward in program history last season as then-sophomore Conor Rooney became the first ever men's golfer in Sagehen Athletics history to compete in the NCAA Tournament. His NCAA Tournament run in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida ended with a tie for 37th place overall. The Sagehens, as a team, finished sixth in the 2017 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship, and will look to compete with a young and talented group of golfers this upcoming season.
Aforementioned Conor Rooney returns for his junior year after a breakout sophomore campaign in which he won All-American and All-Region honors. In the team's recent fall dual match against Occidental back in September, Rooney led all golfers with a score of -2. He was the only golfer to shoot under par. Junior Gilbert Chang will also be counted on to lower the team score, having found success in SCIAC rounds, including a 19th place finish in SCIAC II and 30th in the SCIAC Championship. Sophomores Owen Rosebeck and Sam Sawyers, two consistent contributors to the team scores, will look to improve from their first season after building some familiarity with the courses last year.
The team's two freshmen have generated some buzz in the fall after an impressive showing in the Occidental dual match, as Thomas Verigin finished in second overall with a 75 in 72 par and Alan Tom took third at 77.
Senior Hunter Lowry will use his talent and experience to be a consistent contributor to the team's score card. Lowry finished 10th in the Occidental dual with a score of 82 and was the fourth-highest finisher for the Sagehens back in the SCIAC Championship.
The Sagehens tee off their season with the Whittier Invitational tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. followed by the SCIAC I Tournament at Olivas Links Golf Course from February 17th to 18th with the first tee time at 8:00 a.m for both days. The Hens will have the opportunity to compete alongside conference rivals and Division II programs at the Desert Classic from March 3rd to 5th at Royal Links in Las Vegas, Nevada. The SCIAC II will be hosted at the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, California from April 7th to 8th with opening tee time at 11:00 a.m for both days. The regular closes with the SCIAC Championships at Los Serranos in Chino Hills from April 22nd to 24th.
