Redlands Topples Men's Soccer In SCIAC Opener

Redlands, Calif. – Nick Eary scored a pair of first half goals as the Redlands Men's Soccer team captured a 6-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the SCIAC opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.

The loss drops the Sagehens to 1-3 on the season, including 0-1 in league play, while Redlands levels its record at 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the SCIAC.

Eary got the Bulldogs going in the opening minutes when he scored at the 6:50 mark on a one-timer in the box off assists from Cody Carlson and Sean Cruz. He added his second goal at the 20:47 mark when he took a couple dribbles off an assist from Gabe Ramirez and put a shot into the upper-right corner.

After being held to only one shot in the first half, the Sagehens attempted to regroup after intermission and took four shots in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza, two apiece from freshmen Mark Raftery (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Arash Mahboubi (La Canada, Calif. - pictured, photo by Phil Halpern). But Redlands stopped any comeback hopes by stretching the lead to 3-0 at the 58:41 mark on a goal from Jamie Griffin off a Brad Jackson pass on a give-and-go.

The Bulldogs then tacked on three more goals late to extend the final margin. Matej Kustura scored in the 75th minute on a scramble in the box to push the lead to 4-0. Charles Izydorek added another with 10:06 to play, then assisted on a goal from Noah Prudhomme in the 86th minute to close out the scoring.

Rollie Thayer (Shorewood, Minn.) had three saves in goal for the Sagehens, while freshman Nigel Brady (Sacramento, Calif.) came on and had six saves in the final 20 minutes. Andreas Silva had one save for Redlands, and Jason Smuckler added one save in relief.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it hosts La Verne on Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest.
