Sagehens Fall In Overtime At La Verne

La Verne, Calif. – Playing its third game in five days, the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team was outlasted in overtime by La Verne 1-0 on Wednesday evening at Damien High School as Boye Christensen scored from 25 yards out.

Despite the loss, the Sagehens remain in second place in the SCIAC at 6-3 (7-6 overall), slightly ahead of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-2-1), which has a game in hand. La Verne improves to 4-6-1 overall and 3-5-1 in conference play with the win.

Christensen's goal came 2:35 into the first extra session off a pass from Peter Careaga, as he put a 25-yarder into the upper-right corner past the dive of junior goalkeeper Rollie Thayer (Shorewood, Minn.).

The Sagehens had a 23-17 edge in shots on the day, including 12-5 in the first half, but Richard Duran had six saves to get the shutout for the Leopards. Thayer had four saves for the Sagehens, while freshman midfielder Arash Mahboubi (La Canada, Calif. - pictured) had a game-high five shots.

Pomona-Pitzer had to make up a rained-out game with Whittier on Monday (which it won 1-0), while the Leopards were coming in on four days rest. The Sagehens battled defensively, as they helped La Verne without a goal in regulation, the sixth time in nine conference games this season that Pomona-Pitzer has not allowed a goal through the regulation 90 minutes (with the only exceptions its two losses to first-place Redlands and a 4-1 win over Caltech).

The Sagehens return to action this weekend for a home game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 11 a.m. in an important battle for positioning in the SCIAC standings. The winner of that game will be in the driver's seat for the second seed and the right to host a SCIAC semifinal.
