McDonald's First-Half Goal The Difference As Sagehens Clinch SCIAC bid

Los Angeles, Calif. - Freshman forward Lawrence McDonald (Oakland, Calif.) scored in the first half and the lead held the rest of the way as Pomona-Pitzer defeated Occidental 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The win improves the Sagehens to 9-7 overall and 8-4 in the SCIAC, clinching one of the four bids in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament. Pomona-Pitzer is currently in second place and will battle it out with CMS for the second and third seeds over the final week (Redlands has already clinched the top seed). Occidental slips to 4-12 overall and 4-8 in the SCIAC with the loss.

The winning goal was set up in the 24th minute off a corner kick, which was taken by freshman defender Mark Raftrey (Palo Alto, Calif. - pictured). Raftrey bent a ball into the middle, where McDonald was able to finish for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Sagehens dominated the rest of the way, but were unable to pick up an insurance goal, as they outshot Occidental 18-6. Junior goalkeeper Rollie Thayer (Shorewood, Minn.) had three saves to get the shutout for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens will next be in action when they host their home finale this Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Cal Lutheran, before closing the regular season at Whittier next Saturday.
