Taylor Hat Trick Leads CMS Past Pomona-Pitzer

Claremont, Calif. - David Taylor scored three goals, two off penalty kicks, to lead the CMS Men's Soccer team to a 6-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, CMS improves to 3-0-1 on the year and 2-0 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer slips to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.

CMS jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, as Taylor converted his own rebound after his penalty kick was saved by Pomona-Pitzer goalie Rollie Thayer (Shorewood, Minn.). Jake Bishop added a second goal for the Stags from 12 yards out with Thayer out of net, and Taylor made it 3-0 when he headed in a loose ball off a cross from Ethan Hallberg.

Senior Robbie Hull (Salt Lake City, Utah - pictured) provided the lone highlight for the Sagehens as he blasted a 30-yard rocket off the bottom of the crossbar and in with 6:37 left in the first half to cut the CMS lead to 3-1.

Pomona-Pitzer had a couple of chances to close within 3-2 in the early minutes of the second half, but missed wide from the top of the 18-yard box twice. Another penalty kick gave Taylor a chance to complete his hat trick 10:01 in the second stanza and end any Sagehen comeback hopes.

Harrison Doyle added a one-touch finish for the Stags in the 67th minute, and an own goal off a Pomona-Pitzer defender in the 73rd minute capped off the scoring.

Daniel Roberts had seven saves in goal for CMS, including one on a Pomona-Pitzer penalty kick late in the second half, before giving way to Joseph Mondello for the final 10 minutes. Thayer finished with three first half saves for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action this Saturday for an 11 a.m. home game against Chapman.
