Shekita's Big Half Leads Sagehens Past Caltech

Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore forward Nathan Shekita (San Jose, Calif.) had two goals and two assists in the first half to lead the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team to a 4-0 win over Caltech on Saturday morning.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the SCIAC, picking up three key points to remain in the top four in the conference standings (the top four qualify for the conference tournament). Caltech falls to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in league play with the loss.

Shekita started the scoring when he caught the Caltech defense out of position on a free kick. The Beavers were setting up their wall with goalkeeper Wesley Swank at the near post directing his defenders, and Shekita saw the far side of the net wide open, so from a stationary position, he bent a free kick in off the far post and into the empty half of the net in the 16th minute.

Less than 10 minutes later, Shekita assisted on the second goal for the Sagehens when he played a cross to sophomore defender Mark Raftrey (Palo Alto, Calif.), who ripped a one-timer into the upper-right corner from 20 yards out.

Shekita then put the game away in the closing minutes of the first half, when he found senior defender Erik Munzer (Beverly Hills, Calif.) for a header off a corner kick with 5:18 left in the half. Just 1:05 later, sophomore forward Avery Raimondo (Quoque, N.Y.) played him through behind the Caltech defense along the left side, and he beat Swank to the near post from 15 yards for his second goal of the day.

Pomona-Pitzer finished the day with a 30-4 edge in shots, as senior goalie Rollie Thayer (Shorewood, Minn.) only had to make one save to get the shutout. It was a tough save, though, as he had to dive at full extension to tip away a 23-yard shot from Teo Wilkening midway through the second half. Swank finished with seven saves for Caltech.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it completes the first half of the SCIAC's regular season round-robin schedule with a road game at La Verne on Wednesday.
