Sagehens Fall To Wisconsin-Oshkosh 2-0

Claremont, Calif. - Jonathan Stanley scored late in the first half and Tony Starnes added another late in the second half as the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Men's Soccer team took a 2-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Titans improve to 2-0 on the young season, while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 0-2 with the loss.

Stanley scored the game-winner with 11:32 left in the first half. Tanner Freund played a long ball up the right sideline that Karl Bock got to near the corner and was able to find space for a cross. Stanley snuck in between the Sagehen defense and one-touched a shot under goalkeeper Nigel Brady from eight yards out.

Junior Lawrence McDonald had a couple of good chances in the second half, as he forced Wisconsin-Oshkosh goalie Sam Gabrilska into a diving save from 20 yards out. The rebound bounced loose inside the box for a few seconds, but Gabrilska was able to get off the ground and recover in time to smother the ball before senior Harris Levin could crash in and get it. McDonald also missed high from inside the top edge of the box after a give-and-go with junior midfielder Arash Mahboubi.

The Titans then sealed the game as Ryan Redmond played a long ball up the right sideline to Starnes, who darted into the box and got a clean look from 15 yards out to make the score 2-0 with 6:50 left in the contest.

Brady and Gabrilska each had a save as shots were limited in the hot weather. The Titans finished with an 8-4 edge in shots, and the Sagehens had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Tuesday for a home game against UC Santa Cruz beginning at 4 p.m.
