Late First-Half Goal Holds Up As Whittier Edges Sagehens 1-0

Whittier, Calif. - George Montalvo scored with less than two minutes remaining in the first half as the Whittier Men's Soccer team captured a 1-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Sagehens slip to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the SCIAC on the season. Whittier improves to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Montalvo struck with just 1:54 left in the first half to account for all of the day's scoring. Pomona-Pitzer's best chance to tie came early in the second half, as junior midfielder Nathan Shekita (pictured) hit the post with his initial shot, and then had a rebound attempt saved by Whittier goalkeeper Jorge Rivas seconds later.

Rivas had three saves to get the shutout for Whittier, while junior Nigel Brady had two saves for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Caltech for a 4 p.m. contest, then returns home to face Texas-Dallas on Sunday at 11 a.m. in a non-conference game.
