Chapman Captures 2-0 Win Over Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - Nick Echeverry broke a scoreless tie with 28:43 left in the game and then assisted on the clinching goal with 42 seconds left as Chapman took a 2-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday.

With the loss, the Sagehens slip to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in the SCIAC, while Chapman improves to 5-4-2 and 3-3-1 in league play.

The winning goal was set up when Echeverry took a short pass just over midfield from Dean Navarro and found a seam up the middle of the field. He was isolated against a final Sagehen defender, and cut back to the middle of the field, when he let a shot go from just inside the top of the 18 that blasted by junior goalie Nigel Brady.

The insurance goal came in the final minute with the Sagehens pushed forward. Echeverry set up a counter from Sam Rudich, who broke up the middle of the field into the left side of the box and was able to draw Brady out of net before slotting home an insurance goal.

Brady did have a strong effort in defeat, tallying six saves, including several tough ones in the second half to keep the Sagehens in it. Nick Berardi had three saves to get the shutout, with the biggest one coming in the 84th minute, as he smothered a shot at the top of the six-yard box from freshman forward Voja Maric, and the rebound attempt from senior Harris Levin missed just wide of the left post.

Chapman held a 19-7 edge in shots, but the Sagehens were hurt by inaccuracy, as only three of their 17 shots found the target.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest.
