Shekita's Goal Holds Up As Sagehens Defeat CMS 1-0

Claremont, Calif. - Junior Nathan Shekita broke a scoreless tie just over five minutes into the second half and Nigel Brady (pictured) had a seven-save shutout as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team captured a 1-0 road win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 6-9-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the SCIAC. CMS slips to 9-5-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Shekita scored an unassisted goal on a loose ball in the box 5:59 into the second half. It would turn out to be the last shot the Sagehens took, as Pomona-Pitzer packed it in after that point and relied on its defensive back line, keyed by center backs Geordie Marriner and Paul Picciano, and Brady to keep the Stags off the board.

Brady had three of his saves in the final 12 minutes, two off the foot of CMS forward Ethan Marhoefer, to hold on for the shutout. The Stags had one last corner kick with just over a minute to play for its final chance, but the Sagehen defense held firm.

CMS had a 14-5 edge in shots on the day, although the shot spread was 5-5 when Shekita converted his, and the Stags were unable to find the equalizer the rest of the way.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Cal Lutheran for a 4 p.m. contest.
