Late First Half Goal Drops Sagehens

Orange, Calif. - Karam Gill scored with 1:03 left in the first half and Nick Berardi had five saves to make the lead hold up as the Chapman Men's Soccer team took a 1-0 home win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.

The loss drops the Sagehens to 6-7-1 in the SCIAC, damaging its SCIAC Tournament hopes, as La Verne won on Saturday to improve to 8-6 and solidify its hold on the fourth and final spot in the tournament. Pomona-Pitzer will need to win at Occidental on Wednesday and at home against Redlands on Saturday and hope for help in order to qualify. Chapman secured its spot in the top four, improving to 9-4-1 in league play (11-5-2 overall).

Pomona-Pitzer came out flying early, taking five shots and earning three corner kicks in the first ten minutes of play. Chapman, though, weathered the storm and struck for a goal just before the half as Gill got all alone in front and converted off a pass from Daniel Maliykar.

The lead held 1-0 until late, as Berardi came up big with second-half stops of junior defender Geordie Marriner, sophomore defender Paul Picciano and junior forward Lawrence McDonald in the final 15 minutes.

Junior Nathan Shekita (pictured) led the Sagehens in shot attempts with four, but had two saved by Berardi. Pomona-Pitzer held a 12-10 edge in shots and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks in the loss. Junior goalie Nigel Brady had three saves for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer travels to Occidental on Wednesday hoping to keep its playoff hopes alive. La Verne does have a tough contest on Wednesday at league leading CMS.
