No. 23 Sagehens Stay Hot, Defeat La Verne 2-1

Claremont, Calif. - The No. 23 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team won its fourth game in a row and eighth in its last nine as it defeated La Verne 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Stadium.

The win was the 10th of the year for the Sagehens, who improve to 10-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the SCIAC. La Verne slips to 8-5-1 overall and 5-5 in league play. Pomona-Pitzer opened up an even larger lead in the conference race, as every other team in the conference now has at least four losses after Redlands (6-4 SCIAC) defeated Chapman (5-4-1 SCIAC) on Saturday.

Senior goalie Nigel Brady (pictured) saved a penalty kick in the opening minutes of the second half to keep the score 1-0, and after La Verne tied it in the 65th minute on a goal from Saul Uribe, sophomore Felipe Galvis provided the game-winner in the 72nd minute with a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box.

The Sagehens had numerous chances to extend their lead, as Greg Veron had eight saves in the net for La Verne, while Pomona-Pitzer missed just wide on several counters as the Leopards pushed forward.

Sophomore Matthew Marvin put Pomona-Pitzer in front 1-0 in the 15th minute when he bent in a 20-yard shot from just outside the box on a clearance after a sequence of three Sagehen corner kicks. The Sagehens finished with a 22-10 edge in shots on the day after controlling much of the midfield play.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday for a road contest at Occidental at 7 p.m., its first of three straight road contests (followed by CMS and Chapman).
