Sagehens Fall On Road At Occidental 2-1

Los Angeles - Freshman Max DeWit scored his first career goal in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Occidental Men's Soccer team took a 2-0 lead into the break and held on for a 2-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening.

With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 1-2-1 on the year, and 1-1 in the SCIAC, while Occidental stays unbeaten at 4-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play.

The Tigers struck in the seventh minute on a goal from Connor Freeman, and then added a back-breaking goal from Liam Walsh with 2:03 left in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the break. DeWit scored at the 57:50 mark to cut the lead in half, but the Sagehens couldn't come closer. Jk Gopakumar had the last shot attempt for the Sagehens in the 77th minute, but it was saved by Occidental goalie Theo Atkinson.

Sophomore goalie Ben Mitchell had eight saves for Pomona-Pitzer, matching the total from Atkinson for the Tigers. Occidental had a narrow 17-13 edge in shots for the day (11-6 in the first half).

"We were beaten to every ball on the field in the first half," said Head Coach Bill Swartz. "We were lucky we weren't down three. We battled more in the second half, but we need to want to battle in the game from the warm up."

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it hosts four home games in a span of six days, beginning with a Wednesday contest against Whittier at 4 p.m. That will be followed by Washington (Mo.) on Friday, Cal Lutheran on Saturday and Chapman on Monday.
