Men's Soccer Suffers 2OT Loss to La Verne

Claremont, Calif. - A La Verne goal in the second overtime broke a 2-2 tie and gave visiting La Verne a men's soccer win Monday afternoon at Pomona-Pitzer's Soccer Stadium. The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 6-8-2 overall and 6-6-1 in SCIAC (5th), while La Verne moves to 12-4-1 overall and 8-4-1 in SCIAC (3rd).

After nearly a full half of scoreless play, Sagehen Jacob Merkle found the net in the 45th minute off an assist from Aidan Ferrer. La Verne's Justin Funes evened the game five minutes into the second half on an unassisted goal off a turnover. Each team scored a goal late in regulation. First, Pomona-Pitzer's Jk Gopakumar (pictured) scored an unassisted goal in the 86th minute, but La Verne immediately answered a minute later when Briley Venti scored off a blocked shot -- sending the game into extra time.

Neither team scored in the first OT period. However, in the second extra stanza, La Verne's Saul Uribe scored an unassisted goal in the 104th minute to give the Leopards the win.

Pomona-Pitzer outshot La Verne, 19-12, and Sagehen goalie Ben Mitchell saved three shots.

The Sagehens travel to Caltech Wednesday for a 4:00pm match before returning to host UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference game on Saturday.
