CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens opened up their 2016 season with a 2-1 win over UC Santa Cruz on Thursday night at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
The deciding factor in the match came in the 68th minute as Michael Sanchez committed a foul inside the penalty box that led to a senior Voja Maric penalty kick goal to give the Sagehens a 2-1 advantage.
The Banana Slugs struck first in the first seven minutes of the match as Dominique Royall headed in the first corner of the game off of a feed from Rodrigo Diaz-Valdes to give UC Santa Cruz an early 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens responded later in the first half as sophomore Bjorn Sigurdsson settled a clear attempt and blasted a ball into the upper 90 past the goal keeper to even the score at 1-1.
Pomona-Pitzer was able to hold off the Banana Slugs in the second half in what was an aggressive first game for both teams. The match saw a total of six yellow cards, four for UC Santa Cruz and two for Pomona-Pitzer, and 22 common fouls.
The Sagehens continue their non-conference schedule as they host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, September 3rd at 11:00 a.m.
