Men's Soccer: Sagehens Lose on Overtime Penalty Kick

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Saghens' defense was stellar limiting La Verne's offensive opportunities and the game sat at 0-0 through 90 minutes.

But the Leopards caught a break in overtime with a penalty called on the Saghens in the box, and Nathan Gonzalez converted the penalty kick to give La Verne a 1-0 win.

Pomona-Pitzer now stands at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the SCIAC. The Sagehens have already had two SCIAC games go to overtime after overcoming a 2-0 deficit against Whittier College to win 3-2 last week.

La Verne remains undefeated at 5-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in SCIAC play.

Saghens' keeper Ben Mitchell had a great game in goal for Pomona-Pitzer. The junior totalled seven saves including a spectacular diving save off a header with under two minutes remaining in regulation.

The Sagehens back line led by freshmen Andy Parks and Spencer Burget and senior Chase Abelson helped hold La Verne to just five second half shots.

Peter Rentzepis got off two shots on goal but couldn't convert.

Next Game: The Sagehens head to Orange next Monday for a 7 p.m. game against Chapman.
