CLAREMONT, Calif. – Voja Maric scored his team-leading ninth goal of the year, but the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team couldn't find the back of the net in overtime, tying Whittier College 1-1 on Wednesday night.
Season Impact: The tie moves the Sagehens' record to 7-5-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer currently sits in fourth place.
The Poets move to 3-9-1 overall and 2-8-1 in SCIAC play.
Maric scored the opening goal off a failed clear attempt from the Poets. The ball deflected off a Whittier defender, Maric gathered the ball just outside the right side of the box, beat the defender and scored off the opposite post for the 1-0 lead.
Maric ranks third in the SCIAC with nine goals and third in points with 19.
But the lead would be short lived, with the Poets' James Suri capitalizing just three minutes later to even the game at 1-1.
The Sagehens next best chance was after Whittier was called for a hand-ball inside the box, giving Pomona-Pitzer a penalty kick. Senior Jk Gopakumar lined up for the kick and laid down a hard shot to the ride side of the net, but Poets keeper Jorge Rivas made a great diving save to keep the game even.
Pomona-Pitzer has played in five overtime games this season.
Next Game: The Sagehens have the weekend off then return to action on Monday for a 4 p.m. game against the No. 13 Redlands Bulldogs. Pomona-Pitzer lost to Bulldogs in a 5-3 shootout in their first meeting.
