CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 6-4-2 overall and 5-3-2 in SCIAC play this season.
The Sagehens were led by Peter Rentzepis who tallied his second multi-goal game with two goals in the win. Bjorn Sigurdsson scored his first goal of the season on a header while Slate Rostal, Taylor Reifert and Max DeWit all earned assists. Goalkeeper Ben Mitchell tallied his fourth shutout of the season as he stayed spotless on the afternoon with one save in his clean sheet.
The Sagehens were seeking a big win to help keep them around the top of the table and they found that with their win over Occidental. After the Tigers earned a 3-0 victory earlier in the season at home against the Sagehens, Pomona-Pitzer returned the favor with a 3-0 win at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
The Pomona-Pitzer defense played extraordinary against the Tigers as Occidental only got off one shot on goal and the Sagehens consistently dominated possession throughout the entire game.
The Sagehens struck first as Slate Rostal played in a long ball that was misplayed with some bad communication between the Occidental back line and goalkeeper left Rentzepis with an open goal that he easily tapped in to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.
The Sagehens extended their lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute after Reifert lined up for a corner. Sigurdsson snuck through the defense unmarked and played a strong header into the upper 90 as the Sagehens doubled up their lead over Occidental.
Pomona-Pitzer struck again just five minutes later as they were gifted a goal by the Tigers' defense. Another display of bad communication between the goalkeeper and back line allowed Rentzepis to essentially dribble the ball into the goal as the Sagehens put away Occidental with their third goal in the 65th minute of play.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next host non-conference opponent UC Santa Cruz on Friday, October 13th at 4:00 p.m.
