Men's Soccer: Sagehens Fall To Banana Slugs, 2-1

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team fell to non-conference opponent UC Santa Cruz on Friday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 6-4-2 overall on the season.

The Sagehens were led by senior Peter Rentzepis who tallied the only goal of the game for the Sagehens in the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer got into trouble early on in the game as the Banana Slugs found the back of the net first in the 10th minute as Dominique Royall scored the first goal of the match off of an assist from Aidan Durgerian to take a 1-0 lead.

With the early lead, UC Santa Cruz was able to hold off the Sagehens' attack as they searched for an equalizer but came up empty in the first half as the Banana Slugs went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

Much like the first half, UCSC came out and put a goal on the board early. The Slugs doubled up their lead in the 51st minute as Ryan Nyberg played in a low cross to Ari Sidman who tapped in a goal to take a 2-0 lead.

The Sagehens made some substitutions in the second half to jump start their team, and it worked out to their advantage. Rentzepis and others came into the game and immediately gave the Sagehens' offense life.

Pomona-Pitzer cut the lead in half after Rentzepis took a shot on goal that was saved by the Slugs' keeper but bounced right back to Rentzepis who settled and struck the ball in the back of the net to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 76th minute.

The Sagehens' offense was rolling late in the game as the Banana Slugs tried desperately to hang on to their one-goal lead. Pomona-Pitzer had two corners late in the game played into heavy traffic into the box but UCSC was able to clear the ball to avoid any good looks.

With the clock winding down, the Sagehens had one more good look at goal as Eamon Stein took a last second shot with just seconds left but the ball went just wide of the post as the Banana Slugs escaped with a 2-1 victory.

Up Next: The Sagehens jump back into SCIAC play as they next travel to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, October 18th at 7:30 p.m.
