Men's Soccer: Stein Nets Two Goals As Sagehens Hang On For 3-2 Win

CLAREMONT, CA. – Sophomore Eamon Stein netted two goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer field.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens win their second-straight match and improve to 6-8 overall and 5-5 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Stein who scored two goals in the win. Senior Bjorn Sigurdsson converted a penalty kick goal while sophomore Daniel Tamkin and senior Taylor Reifert each added an assist.

It was a tale of two halves for the two teams in this SCIAC matchup. The first half belonged to the Sagehens as they outscored the Leopards 3-0 in the first 45 minutes.

Pomona-Pitzer came out in the first half firing as they registered multiple scoring opportunities in the early stages of the game. Stein got the scoring going as he took a low cross through the box from Reifert and put it past the keeper to give the Sagehens an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. The Sagehens were able to get one more after freshman Jared Mejia drew a penalty inside the box that Sigurdsson took and buried in the top right corner to double the lead at 2-0.

Stein added his second goal of the game in the 32nd minute after Tamkin got the ball right outside the box and a quick pass to Stein led to a curling shot in the bottom right corner of the goal to extend the Sagehens lead to 3-0 heading into halftime.

After starting the second half down 3-0, the Leopards were a much more aggressive team on offense in the second half. La Verne turned up their offensive effort and caught a break as they got a penalty called inside the box to give them their first scoring opportunity of the game. Daniel Ortega stepped up to the spot and converted to cut the lead down to 3-1.

La Verne kept their momentum going as they scored its second goal of the match just six minutes later. The Leopards broke free down the right side and Johnny DeRueda snuck a ball past the keeper to cut the lead down to one goal at 3-2 in the 69th minute.

With the Sagehens clinging to a one-goal lead, sophomore Bryan Diangson came up with a huge save in the 83rd minute of the match as he sprawled out and registered a kick save to preserve the lead for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Leopards tried to complete the comeback but the first half scores from the Sagehens was too much for La Verne to overcome as Pomona-Pitzer held on for the win at home.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to CMS on Saturday, October 13th at 7:00 p.m.
