WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier College 2-1 in double overtime on Wednesday night at Memorial Stadium.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 7-10 overall and 6-7 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by senior Aidan Ferrer who scored the only goal of the night for the Sagehens in the loss.
A wild match in Whittier ended in the Poets favor as the Sagehens played their final regular season away match of the season. The Poets took the lead with the first goal of the night in the 30th minute after a through ball broke through the Sagehens' backline and Alejandro Trujillo scored a one-on-one chance to give Whittier a 1-0 lead. The Sagehens couldn't find an equalizer before the half as the Poets went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens had a chance in the 65th minute as the offense broke through the backline with a chance to equalize. After a shot by sophomore Daniel Tamkin a flurry of kicks inside the box ended with a ball getting deflected and just glancing off of the post wide as the Poets maintained their one-goal lead over Pomona-Pitzer.
Facing a loss in regulation, the Sagehens had one final opportunity to tie the game. With 30 seconds left on the clock, Sophomore Clay Hamilton crossed a desperation ball into the box that found the head of Ferrer in a crowd of Whittier defenders and Ferrer was able to put the ball past the keeper to tie the match at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.
The deciding goal in overtime came as a heartbreaker for the Sagehens after a ball that was shot wide of the goal was deflected off of the head of a Sagehen defender and went in for an own goal as the Sagehens fell on the road at Whittier 2-1.
