Men's Soccer: Sagehens Draw With Pirates, 2-2

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team ended with a 2-2 draw against non-conference opponent Whitworth on Saturday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: With the draw, the Sagehens move to 1-3-1 overall.

The Sagehens were led by senior Eamon Stein and first-year Jorge Guillen-Lopez who each netted a goal in the draw.

Pomona-Pitzer got on the board first early in the first half as first-year Dylan McCuskey played a low cross into the box that Stein hit first time into the side of the goal to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.

The Pirates evened the score in the 24th minute after a cross into the box found the foot of a sliding player for Whitworth to pull level at 1-1.  Pomona-Pitzer went on to reclaim the lead late in the first half after Guillen-Lopez found the back of the net in the 45th minute as the Sagehens went into the locker room with a 2-1 lead.

Whitworth found its equalizer in the second half at the 51st minute mark to bring the score even at 2-2, but the Sagehens had a chance for a potential game-winning goal after being awarded a penalty in the box in the 61st minute of the match.  The Sagehens went on to miss the penalty after a nice save by the Pirates' keeper as the score remained tied at 2-2.

Neither team could end the game in regulation as the two teams headed into overtime with the 2-2 tie. Both teams had chances in the overtime periods to score goals but the Sagehens ended up going down a man in the 102nd minute after the Pirates were denied a potential goal scoring opportunity.

After being down to 10 men, the Sagehens were able to hold off the Pirates in overtime and came away with the draw at home.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to SCIAC opponent La Verne on Wednesday, September 18th at 7:00 p.m.
