Freestyle Dominance Gives Sagehens Win Over Cal Lutheran

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Swimming and Diving team won all five individual freestyle events as they captured a narrow 117-110 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday.

The men actually lost the final freestyle relay, but had already built enough of a margin to clinch the win, thanks to its dominance in the individual freestyle events.

Hugh Berryman won the sprints, by capturing both the 50-yard (21.96) and the 100-yard (48.67) freestyle. Joe LaBriola touched the wall first for a key victory in the 200 (1:48.68), and J.P. Cumming (pictured) won both distance events – the 500 (5:06.00) and the 1000 (10:34.17).

All-American Max Scholten provided two wins as well, capturing the 100 back in 53.31 and the 200 individual medley (1:57.14), two events in which he holds school records.

The Sagehens will be back in action on Saturday, when they host Redlands in another SCIAC meet at 10:30 a.m.
