Pomona-Pitzer Earns Lopsided Win Over Chapman In SCIAC Opener

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Swimming and Diving team won all but two events as it cruised to a 182-53 win over Chapman in its SCIAC opener.

Senior Tommy DePaoli (Danbury, Conn.) won two individual events, capturing first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.86) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.54). Sophomore Hugh Berryman (Gilbert, Ariz.) also won two, taking the 100 back (56.21) and the 100 free (48.89).

The final event might have featured the most drama in the 200 freestyle relay, with the freshman team for the Sagehens beating the sophomore team by six-hundredths of a second (1:30.72 to 1:30.78). Ferrel Atkins (Alexandria, Va.), Phillip Clayman (Clovis, Calif.), Pieter Derdeyn (St. Louis, Mo.) and Will Thorson (Palo Alto, Calif.) were part of the winning freshman team.

The freshman success didn't stop with the relay win, as Atkins also earned an individual title in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.59), Derdeyn won the 50 free (23.07) and Thorson earned the 100 butterfly (54.94). Clayman was also second to Berryman in the 100 free (49.90), while Clayman, Atkins and Thorson were part of the medley relay team win to start the meet (along with Berryman).

Freshman Andy Wright (Portland, Ore. - pictured) added to the rookie haul with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:15.98). James Waller (Berkeley, Calif.) earned nine points for first place in the one-meter diving competition, as did sophomore Kevin Lu (Danville, Calif.) in the 200 breaststroke, while junior Brian Wysolmerski (New Haven, Conn.) won the 200 free with a 1:51.08.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend at the Finis Invitational, hosted by the South Gate Aquatic Complex.
