Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Swimming team held off a challenge from La Verne to win 154-132 and take two wins in a tri-meet, along with Occidental, at Haldeman Pool on Saturday.
Pomona-Pitzer also defeated Occidental 208-54 for the sweep of the day. With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the SCIAC.
Hugh Berryman (pictured) swept both the 50 and 100 freestyle events and then swam the anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay team that pulled away late in the final event of the day to clinch the win. He took the 50 in 21.63, as teammate Pieter Derdeyn was second in 22.09, and then won the 100 in 47.66.
The meet was within four points (108-104) with four events to go, but Tommy DePaoli came up with an important win in the 100 fly in 53.17 to help give the Sagehens some breathing room. Although La Verne took the 200 IM, Jackson Rafter, DePaoli and Ferrel Atkins finished 2-3-4 to prevent the Leopards from coming closer.
In the final relay, the Leopards led after two legs, but Kevin Byrne opened up a lead on the third leg, and Berryman pulled away in the anchor to give the Sagehens a three-second win in a time of 3:15.41.
DePaoli swept both butterfly events for the Sagehens, while Andy Wright came through with a first place finish in the 1000 (10:24.60) as teammates JP Cumming and Austin Abrams made it a 1-2-3 finish.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend for home meets against Simon Fraser on Friday and Redlands on Saturday.
