Sagehens Edge Cal Lutheran, Defeat Caltech For Tri-Meet Sweep

Pasadena, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Swimming and Diving team edged Cal Lutheran 153-141, and defeated Caltech 221-57 in a tri-meet at Caltech, improving to 6-4 in dual meets and 6-2 in the SCIAC.

Pomona-Pitzer, which does not have a varsity diver, fell behind Cal Lutheran 32-0 before the swimming competition even began, and also lost both relays, but earned just enough points in the main competition to come away with the 12-point win.

The Sagehens got a big lift right away in the 1650-yard freestyle, with senior J.P. Cumming (Portland, Ore.  - pictured) leading a 1-2-3 finish, followed by freshman Andy Wright (Portland, Ore.) and freshman Austin Abrams (Santa Barbara, Calif.). Cumming broke 17 minutes for the winning time, touching the wall in 16:59.45

The Sagehens earned another 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle, with Kevin Byrne (Huntsville, Ala.) finishing first in 1:49.01, followed by freshman Jackson Rafter (Portola Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Chris Garnatz (Federal Way, Wash.). After Cal Lutheran took the 100-yard backstroke and breaststroke, the Sagehens earned their third 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard butterfly with senior Tommy DePaoli (Danbury, Conn.) winning in 2:00.34, followed by freshman Will Thorson (Palo Alto, Calif.) and senior Sam Corfman (Chicago, Ill.).

Sophomore Hugh Berryman (Gilbert, Ariz.) then earned a close win in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.91, and a two-second win in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 47.73. The Sagehens again earned a 1-2-3 in the 500-yard freestyle, with Cumming earning his second win in 4:55.78, followed by Wright and freshman Devon Kennedy (Moraga, Calif.). DePaoli then went 1-2 in the 100-yard butterfly with Thorson to seal the win, before the individual medley and freestyle relays.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action for the SCIAC Championships from Feb. 17-19 at Splash! La Mirada.
