Sagehens Sweep Biola, Fresno Pacific At Tri-Meet

La Mirada, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Swimming and Diving team edged Fresno Pacific on the final relay to sweep both competitors at a tri-meet hosted by Biola on Saturday.

The Sagehens defeated Fresno Pacific 146-141 after a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Junior Hugh Berryman (pictured), in his first competition after spending the fall semester abroad, swam the anchor leg in 20.84 (.55 ahead of his counterpart) to finish off a win by 1.32 seconds. Junior Eirik Hansen, junior Chris Garnatz and sophomore Pieter Derdeyn swam the first three legs, with Derdeyn winning his leg by over a second to stake the Sagehens to a lead heading into the anchor leg.

Berryman also anchored the initial relay (200-yard medley), which the Sagehens won by just under one second to take the early lead. Freshman Daniel To swam the backstroke, sophomore Ferrel Atkins swam the breaststroke and sophomore Will Thorson was in the butterfly leg.

After Fresno Pacific won the first three individual events, To (54.08) and freshman Danny Villars (56.90) went 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke to put Pomona-Pitzer back in the lead. Berryman took the 50-yard freestyle in 21.59, with Hansen third, and To then led the Sagehens with a second-place finish in the 100 free (49.27) and a first-place finish in the 200 back (2:03.59) in consecutive events.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Wheaton (Mass.) at Haldeman Pool in a non-league meet.
