Men's Swimming and Diving: Sagehens Cruise Past Caltech and Oxy

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Swimming and Diving team won all but one event to score a commanding win in their first SCIAC meet of the new year. The Sagehens beat Occidental 214-69, and Caltech 207-70.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to 5-0 in SCIAC dual meets. They are 7-2 overall in dual meets this season and are perfect against Division III institutions. 

Individual Races

The Sagehens opened the individual portion of the meet with a sweep in the 1650 yard freestyle. Jack Swanson won the race (16:38.03), Zach Senator took second (16:52.11) and James Baker (17:17.73) placed third.

Danny Villars posted a big win in the 200 yard freestyle winning the race with a time of 1:46.72. Teammate Liam O'Shea followed in second place (1:49.21). Villars also won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 51.72.

Villars is coming off an outstanding trip to the Northwest that earned him SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors. 

O'Shea came away with a win in the 500 freestyle (4:45.32) with Will Abele following in second (4:46.98).

Daniel To edged out Oxy's Ben Sappey to win the 100 yard backstroke (54.72). Sappey finished second (55.85), and Pomona-Pitzer's Peter Hansen took the third spot (56.62).

In the 200 yard backstroke, Mark Rusznak came away with a win for the Sagehens at 2:02.57.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, Nathan Hahn pulled off a close win with a time of 1:00.11, touching just ahead of Caltech's Tom Gallup (1:00.23).

Abele kept the Sagehens' win streak going with a win in the 200 yard butterfly, touching the wall at 1:58.57.

Pomona-Pitzer scored wins in both of the freestyle sprint events. Adrian Hui won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.25, and Samuel To won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.95.

Jeffrey Tran took second (2:14.82) and Kyle Dalrymple finished third (2:18.04) in the 200 yard breaststroke. 

In the 400 yard IM, Jack Swanson beat out the competition winning the race at 4:22.37. Spencer Satz came in third (4:31.06).


The Sagehens took the top spots in both of the meet's relay races. Erik Garcia, Nathan Halm, Villars, and Hui won the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:34.91. Caltech took second (3:36.01) and Occidental finished third (3:37.33).

In the 200 freestyle relay Pomona-Pitzer scored commanding win, taking first by more than two seconds. Hui, Villars, Daniel To, and Samuel To finished at 1:26.41. Occidental finished second (1:28.65) and Caltech took third (1:30.19).


Jake Crawford swept the diving portion of the meet, winning both the one-meter and three-meter dives. He won the one-meter with a score of 134.90 and the three-meter with a score of 144.15. Michael Schuur took second in the one-meter with a score of 133.90.

Next Meet: The Sagehens travel to Cal Lutheran next Saturday for a 10:30 a.m. meet against the Kingsmen.
