Men's Swim & Dive: Baylis, Stern Make NCAA B Cut In Redlands Meet Win

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Swim and Dive team overwhelmed the University of Redlands in their dual meet on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Bulldogs 221 to 74. The Sagehens took first place in 15 events as Lukas Ming Menkhoff, Will Abele, and Jason Lu took first in two events each while Paddy Baylis made the NCAA B Cut in the 1650 Yard Freestyle.

The Sagehens opened up strong with a first and second place finish in the 3-meter dive as freshman Benjamin Willet took first at 278.15. His classmate Jem Stern followed in second at 273.25. Stern later took first in the 1-meter board with a Haldeman Pool record and NCAA B Cut score of 306.80.

In the swimming events, the Sagehens won the 200 Medley Relay as the "A Team" comprised of Jason Lu, Lukas Menkhoff, Greg Havton, and Will Abele combined for a time of 1:36.25. Over in the distance event, New Zealand native Paddy Baylis won the 1650 Freestyle and made the NCAA B Cut with a time of 16:13.19.

Over in the 200 Freestyle, freshman Archie Spindler took first at 1:44.55 and in the next event his classmate Jason Lu won the 100 Backstroke at 52.06. Lu later won again in the 400 Individual Medley at 4:05.14. Nick Lewis took first in the 100 Breaststroke by a close margin with a final time of 1:00.62. He was just 0.01 second faster than the next finisher, Redlands' Lucas Walker.

Will Abele took the top spot in the 200 Butterfly at 1:55.46 while Havton followed in second at 1:58.73. Abele was victorious again in the 500 Freestyle with a final time of 4:45.67. Havton finally had his individual victory in the 100 Butterfly, blazing through the competition with a 51.77 final time. Menkhoff finished in first in the 50 Freestyle at 21.13 and won again in the 200 Breaststroke at 2:08.01. Liam O'Shea won the 200 Backstroke at 1:58.57.

In the final event of the day, the Sagehens ended on a high note, winning the 200 Freestyle Relay as Havton, Conner Wells, Lewis and Menkhoff combined for a time of 1:27.26.  

Up Next: The Sagehens will participate in the Ted Mullin Hour of Power on Monday, November 19 to raise Sarcoma awareness and fundraise for research. They will compete again on Friday, November 30 as they head across the street to face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 3:00 p.m.
