Men's Tennis: No. 11 Sagehens Roll Past Poets, 8-1

WHITTIER, CA — The Sagehens swept doubles, and the No. 11 Pomona-Pitze Men's Tennis team won big on the road, beating SCIAC opponent Whittier College 8-1 Friday afternoon.


The Sagehens jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles portion of the match. Antony Bello and Graham Maassen scored an 8-6 match in the No. 1 slot.

Avery Bicks and Marko Mandic added an 8-4 win in the No. 2 slot. Kalyan Chadalavada and Quinn Hirsohn rounded out doubles with a 8-5 win in the No. 3 match.


Antony Bello added to his doubles win, winning his No. 2 singles match. He won the first set 6-4 then rolled in the second set 6-0. Mandic won big in the No. 2 match, besting Elmer Van Butselaar 6-0, 6-3.

In the No. 4 match, Josh Gearou jumped out to a 6-0 win in the first set, then finished off his opponent winning 6-3 in the second set. Sam Malech was dominant in the No. 5 slot for the Sagehens, beating Maxwell Koszowski 6-2, 6-0.

Avery Bicks added a win in the No. 6 spot for Pomona-Pitzer, beating his opponent 6-2, 6-2. Maassen fell in a tight match at No. 1, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to 17-8 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC play. The Poets drop to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

Next Match: The Sagehens return home for their final regular season SCIAC match when they host the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags on Thursday, April 20 at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
