Relay Team Breaks Sagehen Record By 40 Seconds

Los Angeles, Calif. - The 4x1600 team of Ben Girodias, Pryor Stroud, John Fowler and Paul Picciano broke the Pomona-Pitzer record by 40 seconds to help the Sagehens to a commanding lead over Occidental in their annual dual meet.

The two teams will complete their annual battle for the banner next weekend with the distance events, although the Sagehens are full in control with the men leading 87-44 and the women ahead 77-51. This is the fourth annual dual competition between the programs, with Occidental taking the first two in 2010 and 2011, and the Sagehens winning the last two.

The four runners in the 4x1600 finished the race in 18:01.31 to set a new Sagehen standard. The Pomona-Pitzer B team in the same race (Alex Johnson, Michael Cork, David Erf, Dom Reinhold) actually broke the old record as well, recoring a time of 18:39.44.

Titus Van Hook also produced a personal best time in the 100 meters with a time of 11.12 to finish first in that event and move into eighth place on the Pomona-Pitzer all-time list. Matt Sloane won the 400 in a time of 50.10, and Stroud won the 800 in 2:00.04

The Sagehens also dominated the throwing events with Garret Bell taking first in the shot put with a 40-10.25 and hammer throw with a 132-5, and Chris Garnatz winning the discus throw (118-9), and javelin (156-8). Matt Owen also pole vaulted 13 feet to win that event, and Joe Knight, who is also a member of the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team, high jumped six feet to come in first as well.
