Messana's 800 Highlights SCIAC Quad Meet

Los Angeles, Calif. - Freshman Paul Messana ran a 1:52.68 in the 800 meters, the fastest time in Division III so far this year (entering the weekend) to highlight the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Track and Field team's performance at a SCIAC Quad meet at Occidental on Saturday.

Messana won his race by almost three full seconds over the second-place competitor Ashraf Mathkour of CMS. His time also ranks fifth in Pomona-Pitzer history.

The Sagehens also had first place finishers in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and the 400-meter hurdles in a strong showing from their sprinters. Titus Van Hook ran an 11.04 in the 100 to win that event, and then came in first place with a 21.99 in the 200.

Greg Hook also put forth a stellar time in the 400, finishing in 49.01, which is the sixth-best time nationally this season. He edged out Alex Nieves of Occidental by .16 to come in first. Bennett Kopperud took the 400-meter hurdles in 55.67. winning by a half-second.

Ben Girodias added a win in the 5000 meters, breaking the 15 minute mark in 14:57.59 to win his race by almost 15 seconds. Chris Garnatz highlighted the field events by winning the javelin with a throw of 160-1.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend at the California/Nevada Championships at UC San Diego, and will then be back home in two weeks when it hosts the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 12.
