Sagehens Have Three Individual Winners At SCIAC Quad

Pasadena, Calif. - Chris Garnatz (javelin - pictured), Corey Purcella (steeplechase) and Bennett Kopperud (400 hurdles) won their individual events for the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Track and Field team at a SCIAC Quad meet hosted by Caltech.

The Sagehens competed in the meet against host Caltech, La Verne and Cal Lutheran in its final tuneup before SCIAC Championships.

Garnatz had a throw of 56.16 meters (184 feet, three inches) to take first place in the javelin, a new personal best which moves into 10th place on Pomona-Pitzer's all-time list.

Purcella won a close race with teammate Parker Head in the steeplechase, winning 9:55.68 to 9:56.64 as both Sagehens broke the 10-minute barrier. Kopperud ran a 55.53 in the 400-meter hurdles to win that event, while also taking fourth in the 110 with a 12.29.

Ben Girodias finished second in the 1500 meters in 4:02.61, two days after running the 10K at the Mt. Sac Relays on Thursday night and moving into fourth in Pomona-Pitzer history with a new personal best (30:31). He was followed by teammates Adam Hathaway in third (4:05.06) and Michael Cork in fourth (4:06.80).

Titus Van Hook came in fourth in the 100 meters with an 11.14, and added a second-place finish in the 200 with a 22.39. Charlie Watson earned a second place finish in the 5000 with a 15:40.42.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action at the SCIAC Championships on May 2-3, hosted by Occidental.
