Fowler Breaks La Verne's Track Record To Highlight SCIAC Quad

La Verne. Calif. - Junior John Fowler broke La Verne's track record in the 5000 meters with a 15:09.22 as the Sagehens won all three of its SCIAC duals in a multi-team meet on Saturday afternoon.

The Sagehens defeated Cal Lutheran, Chapman and Caltech to start out the year 3-0 in SCIAC duals. The closest was against Cal Lutheran, which Pomona-Pitzer won 99-63 (although La Verne also competed in the dual, the Sagehens did not have a head to head score against the Leopards).

Fowler wasn't the only individual standout on the day for Pomona-Pitzer. Chris Garnatz won the javelin (50.96 meters), while teammate Brandon Hull was right behind him in second place at 46.38. Parker Head (pictured) took first in the steeplechase with a 10:09.23, while the Sagehens went 1-4 in the 1500 meters, with Paul Messana winning in 4:06.43, edging Adam Hathaway (4:06.79), Pryor Stroud (4:07.36) and Jeremy Karson (4:07.36).

The Sagehens also dominated the 800 meters with five of the top seven, led by Andrew Segraves in first and Nicholas Beatty in second.  Bennett Kopperud, the defending SCIAC champion, also won the 400 meter hurdles in 56.24.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action next weekend for the Occidental Distance Carnival on Friday.
